Hi all.

Just a heads up to UF users, Ultra Fractal 6 is now available for download.
The new features are detailed here: https://www.ultrafractal.com/whatsnew.html

looking forward to seeing some thoughts on this.  sounds like it is a generically-implemented sort of deal.  quite slow im guessing (i imagine even just comparing perturbation without SA, assuming that was not implemented here).  so the real question is what kind of measures were implemented to ensure accuracy, and how they compare to what we've been doing.

I downloaded the free trial but the setup exe has some EULA terms that I won't accept, so I won't try it.

Reading the manual online, it seems you have to write perturbation formulas explicitly (no automatic magic), and series approximation is only for "Mandelbrot (builtin)".

The perturbation has 3 modes, "precise" (default), "fast", "very fast", I guess that controls the Pauldelbrot threshold or something similar?  (Guessing is all I can do, without access to the source or detailed explanations.)

good to see progress in the program that got me into fractal art many years ago.
installing right now.
claude, you made me read the EULA (I'm usually guilty of the most widespread lie "I've read the license agreement") and have to say:
That's really harmless. I see nothing wrong with it.
Otto, thanks for keeping it short enough to make it readable.. ;)

okay, installation went fine, but starting up crashed the program - clicked "send bugreport by mail" - nothing happened or I would have sent it.
retried - nope, doesn't work.

Same here, but it's just a *.00 bug. Just turn OpenGL acceleration off by adding a registry key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ultra Fractal\6.0\Fractal]
"OpenGL"=dword:00000000
and it works fine.

I did a benchmark on a 1E138 location: 4mins in Kalles Fractaler, 25mins in UF6 in "very fast" perturbation mode. Given all the other features you get I think that's not bad and it will probably get faster in 6.xx.

Show-stopper with UF has always been for me that you can't recolor without recomputing everything from scratch.

I should mention.... if you're testing UF6 for speed, disable anti-aliasing (View>Preferences>Defaults). This makes a huge difference!

I haven't tested UF6 against other software yet but its around 3 times faster than UF5 for me, and deep zooming into the Mandelbrot set is now a practical proposition :)
