(Fragmentarium) Synthclipse and Fragmentarium
« on: September 09, 2019, 09:49:28 PM »
[WARNING] Geeky stuff ahead. I'm a former IT professional and applications programmer. I like geeky stuff. ;)

Greets to all. I wasn't sure where to post this, but as I've been using Synthclipse in an art project this sub-forum seemed appropriate.

Synthclipse: http://synthclipse.sourceforge.net/
Fragmentarium: https://github.com/3Dickulus/FragM
React JSX: https://reactjs.org/docs/introducing-jsx.html
OpenGL glsl: https://www.khronos.org/opengl/wiki/OpenGL_Shading_Language

Synthclipse, if your not familiar with it, is an Eclipse-based IDE set up to be an OpenGL shader development tool. It allows one to create and test OpenGL shaders in both native glsl and jsx using Javascript React jsx. All it requires is to have Java 8>= (JRE or JDK) installed and an OpenGL capable video card. These days, who doesn't use both? I use Synclipse to prototype shaders for game projects and other uses.

Recently, in returning to an interest I've had in fractals for years, I recalled that Synthclipse will import Fragmentarium .frag files. Why would you want to do this? The primary reason, for me, is that I find Fragmentarium is excellent for developing the fractal and Synclipse for tweaking it.  As well, Synclipse has some nice animation and audio import tools. Very suitable to creating multimedia pieces.

Another reason, aside from using imported Fragmentarium files, is that using jsx I can create Javascript usable shader files for web-enabled content using libraries like React and others. I think it would possible to translate from glsl to jsx and embed your fractal creation in say, an HTML5 or WebGL page for instance. I haven't tried it yet, but it's on the list ... ;)

See what you think if you've got a project in mind to which it would be suited. :)
