Sound Art

Do you want to talk with dolphins, trees, stones, or even representatives of extraterrestrial civilizations? With those who do not understand the human language. But we can not tell about ourselves in words. And waves, vibrations, sound. With the help of Sound Art, you can convert almost any image into a sound portrait. Including your own. And these sounds will tell more about us than any words.

Sound Art — a free program for visualizing sound and sound images. It is designed to convert images into sound and vice versa. Interpretations occur in accordance with the formulas of Fourier transforms and have mathematical precision! With the help of the program you can get very unusual sound textures, trying to convert various types of images, and making inverse transformations. It is very easy to work with the program, using simple actions from the sound you get a kind of picture, a sonogram. You can do anything with sonograms. For example, print and frame the wall. Or, after processing the image in any image editor, convert it back into sound and enjoy the new sound of the original material. Sound Art is designed for computer musicians, sound designers, specialists in the field of visual creativity. And all those who are interested in musical experiments.

Sound Art demo video

I hope that somebody will try to convert his fractals and attractors into sound, enjoying the result of it!  ;)

I took the first frame of the animation to create the soundscape - using Sound Art.

Could you give me some hint about how to get some image from sound because the files I tried to convert give me only black or white images.

And if you try a few frames? Should get a kind of fractal symphony  ;)

If you use mono, then the images are in gray scale. The sound in the left channel colors the sonogram in red, in the right channel in green. The blue pixels are the mono component of the stereo signal. Most likely, a particularly colorful picture will not work, since records are rarely seen where the channels are 100% isolated from each other.

I am working on that fractal symphony... I think it works better with slower moving animation - right now I am taking time slices of the animation and using the key frame of the slice to create the sound for that slices' length. Also, because of the way color works with Sound Art, I need to create fractals that have high contrast and few distinct colors. As soon as I have time to work with this further, I will post some extended length stuff.

I too am having the same problem as <gerson> when trying to go from sound to image conversion... either I get just an all black or all white image, or I get a flat horizontal line which is either red, green or white - I am not able to produce anything close to the images in the test directory even when using the test .wav files as the sound input.

One last thing - on Windows 10, the program crashes on the 6th or 7th repeat of the sound playback (with auto-repeat on or off) if I do not do any other function within Sound Art between the playbacks.

Here is another experiment -

Very interesting video.
I am waiting for further experiments with the program.

You should use the latest version of the program - 1.1, which is available on the download page.

Sound Art was developed just in Windows 10 and also tested in this OS.

Also Sound Art was tested in Linux Ubuntu 18.04 through Wine.

The only drawback is the larger icon in the title. Functionally works in Linux.  ;)
