As the title says is ever higher pixel count better? even though your eyes have far less resolution. The video goes some way into explaining both,  and how much is just techno blurb and marketing hype. Tv manufacturers keep trying to tease us into buying the latest technology with ever more blurb, bigger screen, more pixels curved screen, smart and so on. I have a  Smart? Samsung 49" tv that is very nice to watch but the only 4k/8k  I watch is streamed from an online source mostly or my Gopro (4k) actioncam. I'm not convinced more is better just confused at times. the downside is the marketing hype gets me reaching for the credit card.   :(

8k seems overkill to me. 4k is great.
I use a 49inch 4k samsung tv as my main computer monitor (and my old 21inch monitors left and right of it - never again worry about screen estate.. :)
the only problem now is finding my mouse cursor  :fp: ;D

watching zooms on this is incredible.

using a tv is much cheaper than buying a 4k computer monitor.

Omg.... your eyes must be far apart ;D    I have a lowly 1920/1080 Phillips monitor that is about as big a footprint I can manage at the moment it has a nice sharp clear bright picture though I play my zoom videos and such on the Samsung TV. Nice speakers.

I'm using an Asus 28" 4K monitor,
and I also upgraded the GPU from a GTX760 to a GTX1060
since what I read seemed to imply that the old card
was MAYBE on the verge of usability.

The image quality definitely looks necessary in generating these fractals
(eg. making smooth edges).  8)

I got this 48" 4K TV brand-new for 400 ;) It was that price because it's not fully 4K, it's actually only half 4K resolution horizontally - so I guess really 2K.
Having said that even this is absolutely worth it for TV video at 4K resolution and had I the cash I'd've paid a lot more for true 4K at this size  - BUT I'd make sure from a software use point of view that if you want your desktop at full 4K res then make sure the device's display is at least 50Hz or more, 30 is simply sluggish, it feels like your mouse is not working, I only use the full res for 4K video/TV and viewing final renders or full detail photos not for normal computer use.

Regarding "you can't see in 4K" totally irrelevant unless you're defining the distance from the screen and the screen's size - oh and forcing a person to work like a 100% static camera with no micro-movement whatsoever.....
I would agree that 4K on a portable mobile device or smallish laptop or monitor/TV <24" is probably overkill ;)

to stick with your correct point that without including distance to the resolution this is pointless:
it makes sense though once you put this small mobile device extra close to your eyes - as in a vr device:

I have a oculus dk2 and the resolution is sooo far from good.. looking forward to someday try a vr set like that pimax with no more visible pixels.
