Somehow the mandelbulber 2.21 seems to be much more unstable than 2.20.

It shuts down often suddenly. Seems to happen only, when i don't use OpenCL. Happens even, when i let it run in background. When i want to watch result, the application is just "gone" and everything has to be rendered again. I use I7 8700K and current Win10 and 8 GB RAM and GTX 1030 Graphic. Maybe others have the same issue and maybe this helps to resolve it. Until then i will use 2.20 or try to use OpenCL whenever it works.

no other users  have reported this problem, but most only use openCL

I use CPU a lot in linux and have not had this problem

maybe change logging verbosity to 2  (file - program preferences - general tab near the bottom) and post log file after a crash

log file c:\users\your-name\mandelbulber_log.  REmemeber to change verbosity back to 1 as it slows things down

I have changed the setting to 2 and will post the file as soon as i encounter the next crash. Next bigger sessions will be at weekend.

Unfortunately i only do simple stuff in non-openCL mode, so I do not really heavily  test the program. If you have a crash the log would be helpful, but also the settings file so that we can try to reproduce

I just had another crash and attached log and settings file.

Maybe the ongoing rendering of the thumbnails on the top bar could be a cause. During this crash 3 thumbs were also rendering. During the first crash series were also thumbs rendering.

It all sounds a bit weird about thumbnails still rendering,  I have asked Buddhi to have a look, i do not think the log tells us anything other than where it crashed

This formula should be run with custom DE function not linear. I am not sure yet how to explain this to users,  most formulas that are by default Custom DE must use CustomDE, although there are a few that can use linear as well (but may get a different shape)

Using MC is a killer in no-openCL mode for your settings, this may have someting to do with the crashes

you could try using MC on this and see if it crashes

Code: [Select]

Thanks for reporting this problem.
I have looked into log file. Unfortunately I cannot see anything specific.
I will do more detailed debugging of the code. Maybe there is some hidden bug.

Actually im using "wrong" functions since the beginning. Attached is my first sets images made for demonstrating why. I discovered this very soon after beginning of using mandelbulber.

The cutcube formula in the uploaded setting actually works way more stable and faster and more beautiful with linear. At least on my computer, so that actually wondered why custom DE is preferred.

I usually let this off due rendering time and do this afterwards. But on this specific formula on linear function the calculation time is so low, that MC can actually be rendered live. So i was happy to try out this opportunity. Crashes happened without MC and on other formulas as well.

yes I see that the formula is useable with Linear DE  ( i guess i never tried it before),  I just needed to increase the max iters.  (although i do lose my initial fold cut shape and get more of an IFS type thing)

Thanks for clarifying that the crashes occur with other formulas (and without MC).  It is likely to be difficult to figure out as we have yet to reproduce the problem using your settings.

If the problems is happening frequently, then these are some methods we have used in the past to diagnose issues:
- try another computer and see if the problem still occurs
- make a video to capture a crash
- run program with linux OS  using QT debug mode to get a crash report

I tried now Mandelbulber 2.22 and it has even higher unstability. Crashes allways and even after short use.

I made a log with logging verbosity 3. It ends with a error in some kind of font face.

Mandelbulber 2.20 works still fine.

Recently verbosity 3  actually made the program crash. (so use verbosity 2)
We have not been getting any other users  advising that V2.22 is unstable. If windowsOS, check if TDR registry edit  has not been overwritten. Edit V2.20 working OK = registry edit is OK,

Verbosity 2 gives same result.

in V2.22 this font parameter has been added, so maybe it is related.

I was getting the

Warning: DirectWrite: CreateFontFaceFromHDC() failed error

but it has gone away???

We need Buddhi to look at this

This error is probably related to the bug in Qt libraries: https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-79140
