Hi all,

I've been stuck on this issue for about a week and wanted to see if anyone knew how to help.

I'm using mandelbulber 2.21, windows 10.
My specs are:

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
GPU: AMD RX580
RAM: 16GB DDR4

Everything works quite well, except for volumetric lighting on custom lights.

Adding custom lights works, but as soon as I tick "Light #1 as volumetric" mandelbulber starts chewing up all of my memory until resources are exhausted. It stays on "compiling openCL" and mandelbulber becomes unresponsive requiring a restart.

Main light as volumetric does work.

I have tried every combination of recent driver for my GPU and have fiddled around with the TdrDelay and TDrDdiDelay but nothing seems to work.

Can someone tell me how I am able to troubleshoot this? Are there mandelbulber or openCL logs that I can check?

Thanks,

File - Save setting to clipboard     then post here and we can test

and

C:\Users\"yourname"\mandelbulber.log

not sure if the log will tell you much (can increase the verbosity to 2 and it might tell more, but i do not know much about the log)

, but if we can test reproducability by using your settings, that  would help. I think my GTX 960m should be worse than a AMD 580

also what OS are you using?

Thanks for the reply :)

I'm using windows 10. I've just repaired windows and reinstalled GPU drivers but still no luck. It was working fine about a week ago and then just stopped all of a sudden.
I've tried on my partners PC which has the same GPU and it works ffine.  I'm still able to play games so I don't think my GPU is broken.

Settings:

# Mandelbulber settings file
# version 2.21
# only modified parameters
[main_parameters]
ambient_occlusion_enabled true;
aux_light_enabled_1 true;
aux_light_intensity_1 0.09617452333412882;
aux_light_position_1 0.5639018991538558 -1.292209379202296 0.4773180409875667;
aux_light_volumetric_enabled_1 true;
flight_last_to_render 99999;
keyframe_last_to_render 0;
mat1_is_defined true;
raytraced_reflections true;

I've attached my log. Thanks.

weird, I think problem is to do with your computer, as it works OK on girlfriends computer with same GPU.   Your settings work ok on my laptop.

You could send a screenshot of the registry TDR thingy, so we can double check,  but i am guessing it is likely that i cannot help

Try updating the drivers? Very important to keep those up to date.

ahemmm...
have nearly the same problem ...
W10 - Xeon 12 core - FirePro w8100

all renders nice with opencl - but volumetrix effects (vol lights / special nebula effects) make the app struggle heavy ..
its renders then many times slower (factor 10+) or ends up with all ram addressed (16GB RAM)

Latest driver

will next time i render pictures make an log ...

Just tested under Linux with AMD RX 580 everything works fine (low memory consumption, and quick compilation of OpenCL kernel). With NVidia also works well.
This problem could be related to some bug in AMD driver for Windows. Unfortunately I'm not able to help with it.

@ R_Team, next time you have the problem please send the settings.  BTW a combination of small ray steps and  huge max view distance will slow things down, especially if you are using constant detail size (opposed to detail level)

Thanks for your help anyway.

I'm inclined to say that it's not GPU or driver related, I've tried all recent drivers back to the beginning of 2019. It was working at one point and then just stopped working.
I'm able to play games at high framerate with max settings and I am able to render with the main light as volumetric.

As soon as I turn on any other light as volumetric mandelbulber starts using 12GB+ of memory and crashes. Even in very low resolution or with very low detail fractal.

Event logs show this:

I might install Ubuntu and try just to rule out windows as the problem. If I manage to fix the problem ill let you all know. Thanks.

hey guys,

It's working in ubuntu. A bit of a shame that I have to switch OS to render but oh well.  No idea what could be causing a freshly installed win10 setup to have a very specific issue like that.

Thanks for your help anyway all.

Sounds like it's almost guaranteed to be a driver problem. Installing older drivers won't help at all, only the latest, directly from GPU manufacturer site.

You can test your OpenCL installation using something like IndigoBench: https://www.indigorenderer.com/indigobench
