A great piece of software ... that I have a lot of fun with. The possibilities are almost infiinite. And the rendering engine produces stunning results. But my creativity is limited.

It took me a few days to get my thoughts sorted. And the following lines are not meant to be a critique but to be taken as an inspiration for a Mandelbulber V4 or beyond ;)

The first idea I had was, how would an amazing box look like if it has a scale of -2 at x=-1 and a scale of 2 at x=1 ... a linear transition within one frame. How would it look like if the blending would be based on a square function, a sine ... the square of a sine? Why are the values used in the fractal formulars constants?

So I was thinking of a Fractal software with the flexibility of a node-network like in Terragen.
Take the following image as a reference for a distribution mask made with a simple combination a sine-functions:

My imagination gives me ideas of blending variations of one fractal formulars or even different fractal formulas or objects based on a smooth transition. Think of the cones in the above image. With a flexible node network, these could be the flowers of an Amazing Surf (In the above image these would be the same instances, as the used function nodes were resetting the origin of the ordinate system).
Something like the following but with fractals and not only noise-displaced surface:

Here I am thinking of using functions instead of image-based maps on the materials.

Maybe this is just my personal dream, as this would cause a complete rewrite of the software ... but at least I shared an imagination, instead of an image ;)

H'mmm, there are some issues relating to Distance Estimation for Ray Marching, which limits what can be done and still achive a reasonable quailty image
But we can do semi-similar sorts of things, (this would require a lot of explaining  :)  )

They can be varied each iteration, in a variety of ways. Like you can vary scale, power, offsets etc, you need to choose a formula of transform that has this function. You can also alternate constants and also  apply conditions. The possibilities are infinite

Each object can have it's own material, but the material textures are generallty limited to being implemented by using displacement maps.
 However texturising with functions can already be done to some degree. Further investigation is on the TODO list.  The perlin gaps and maze would be cool.

I have seen all types of geological terrain and material (sedimentary, metamoprhic, plutonic) in  3D fractals. The maths used can be similar to geological forces, it is a cool thing :)
