I've been wondering, is there possibility any way to reduce the amount of CPU usage MB3D takes up when rendering?

Not sure if it's the same with anyone else, but anytime I render, the program literally uses 99% of my CPU, and I can't do anything else on my computer. I don't mind leaving it alone, which is what I have been doing in the past, but I've been trying to create an animation for my friend and I've been months behind on working on it because I need my computer constantly for other work, and it just hasn't been feasible to do so.

Would putting the program on a USB drive/external drive help reduce CPU? Is there a way to set a limit somehow on its CPU usage?

if you have a multicore processor you can use the taskmanager to assign which cores do what tasks.
I have only the german windows 10, so names may be translated wrong by me, but: task manager-->details, there right click mandelbulber and choose the 4th entry, "determine affiliation" (my translation). I usually untick core 1, so that can handle my daily tasks.
this does the job for me.

Another option is to change priority of the fractal program in the taskmaster, from normal to very low. It will allow you to use the computer for other stuff while you render.

"determine affiliation" (my translation).
I have heard terms like "core affinity" or "task affinity" for that kind of assignment, but am not a Windows user. So not sure if my translation attempt is any better. :)

In general, I would also suggest lowering the priority of long running background tasks. That's what I do to keep the machine somewhat usable.

Lately I've been using the M3D "Internals" tab

and changing the thread # from 8 to 7

to see if it affects rendering stopping or extreme slowdowns.

I was seeing the "time to go" counter raising to ridiculous times.

Seems to work...
