If I create a fractal which takes days to calculate, I offcourse want to save it. A normal kfr file only stores the location, not the result, if I'm not mistaken. I can also save as JPG. But jpg is lossy. I can also save as a map file. I have no idea what a map file is; it is not a bitmap. But I can't reopen a map file; the program then says 'Invalid parameter file'.
So: what is a map file, and why can't I reopen it?

"File->Open" is for KFR. "File->Open Map" is for KFB.

The map file (.kfb) contains the calculated fractal data (iteration counts, sometimes distance estimates if you enabled derivative calculations).  It also contains some colouring information (but this is not complete).  It does NOT contain the coordinates.  You need to load the parameter file (.kfr) before loading the map file to be able to navigate further.  You may want to load a palette (.kfp) after opening the map file.  You can rename .kfr to .kfp and load it in the colour dialog.  The last file type is for settings (.kfs), useful for configuring command line rendering or saving presets.

JPEG is lossy, but recent KF can also save as PNG and TIFF.  If you weren't aware of my continuation of Karl's work, see https://mathr.co.uk/kf/kf.html

Thanks; it still doesn't help if I load the small kfr file first (which I saved also); I then still get the 'Invalid parameter file' error. But there isn't a 'File - Open Map' in my old version anyway; and if I create a map file it is also saved as kfr (but is seems big enough to store the iteration data).
But I'm gonna use your newer version ; I wasn't aware there was a newer version :).
