Is this the so called "whipped cream" effect?  Quite a lot non conventional formulas produce this distinct swirly colours effect often at the expense of fractal complexity

Not intentionally. The color is calculated by taking the maximum euclidian orbit distance of a non-escaping point to the origin and then repeatedly applying log to get to a value between 0 and 1 (I did not track how often that happened).
