Personalized Image threads
As an optional alternative to the gallery system that you know from FF1, we introduce a new way of sharing your images.
Simply create your own thread in this fractal image thread board
Instead of starting a new thread for each image or using the gallery, you just add a new post and use our drag&dop attachement uploader to add an image (or up to 5 per post).

The big advantage over the gallery is that every time you post one of your images, the thread with all your previous images will automatically be re-viewed by interested visitors - easy access. Your old images don't get lost in the archive.

Rules:
-Only the thread-starter is allowed to post images in his thread.
Comments & Questions are fine, but basically this is about presenting the images of the threadstarter, not for extended discussions.
-Please only use image attachements. No embedding of externally hosted images or image-links from the gallery. (They load full size and can make a thread 10+megabytes large, killer for mobile users)

We increased the thumbnail imagesize so you actually have a nice preview in the thread. It works much better than the gallery modification we currently use.

An inspiration for this idea was this thread as well as "Mandelbrot Safari" (which also shows why we should use our upload-system instead of external hosting that might go offline after a few years)

I'm a bit confused.  I put the images in the thread as you suggested. Probably a good plan, but what to do with the user gallery's?  You can't connect the two options, either the personal thread, or the gallery?  There are a lot of choices now.. ;)  When I visit the site I like to watch the gallery with all the posted pictures from all the members in a overview, in this manner you can no longer see them all. I have to check and go through all the posts to see who entered a picture, right? Or am I missing something?   I hope you understand what I mean.

Re: Thoughts on the gallery

No way to automate.

It did give me the idea to screenshot the thread images (attached or linked) and upload to my User Gallery with a (View Topic:) link back to the thread post. 8)

The whole topic of how to properly present images has been a long discussion - with no satisfying solution yet.
I never liked the gallery, it is badly programmed and causes other problems while missing essential features.
I personally would prefer to just drop the whole thing and use attachements with our new drag&drop function. Seems so much easier, looks better and doesn't 'spam' the forum with an automated post for every uploaded image.

But Sockratease always found the gallery to be essential to Fractalforums. And I do agree that having a "recent images"-page is nice and comfortable.

Maybe we will find a solution someday.

Temporary workaround: If you want your own images of the image-threads to also appear on the recent-images page you could upload them to the gallery and then take that link and use it to embed the images in the image-thread.

I disagree.  Or the whole meaning of the Forum is to be a place for only those who want to discuss fractals/science/software. On a level that most members don't even understand.  Not even to mention those who visit the forum.  It will become a forum just for the elite.  While in my humble opinion this should also be the place to promote fractals as. for as many people possible. The more visits the better.  And pictures makes it attractive for people to visit the site.  Not just math and theory!  You could see that on the old site, how many people watched the gallery?  Well many!  And those who liked it, who become inerested in fractals maybe now participate on the site.

That the gallery gives so many problems, that is just too bad.  In my opinion all the different gallerys are not necessary.  Make one general gallery and for every member a user gallery.  All the different kind of fractals can be done with a label. Label it, Apophysis, or Mandlebulb or whatever and that's it.
That will make it effeici?nt and a lot easier.

Don't be afraid, the gallery willl stay. Even if someday we find a better alternative, presenting images will always be an essential part of fractal forums! Images are the entry-point for most newcomers.

I really hope there will emerge a better gallery software. In other systems like wordpress there are so many great and beautiful ways to present images. Ours is still stuck in pre 2000.
We even thought about adding a wordpress section to create beautiful galleries, but it would make things complicated.
So we just hope that someone develops a proper gallery plugin for SMF.

I like the idea of making just one main gallery and sorting stuff with tags (+user gallery). Maybe with a little customization we can integrate that with our new prefix-modification. Added to our list.

I understand that it is very easy talking, but there is always someone who got to do it.  Maybe just the maingallery, labels and user gallerys is a lot
easier to integrate, I hope so!  For we might like chaos but preferably not on the website, right?  ;)

have a good day!

Does this only apply to Image Threads?

Does it apply to Fractalforums »  Fractal Art »  Fractal Image Gallery » threads as well?

No linking of internally hosted images?

(Please feel free to delete any of my threads that are causing issues for mobile users with data caps.) 8)

I'd be sorry to see them go completely and I hope you will mirror them with images hosted here, using attachements.

Hm, the images hosted here via gallery and embedded in the imagethreads will cause the same bandwidth issues.
So to make sense we should avoid this too.  I added this to the rule.

Forum needs to allow inline attachments.
I will use attachments for nonutilitarian images when ability to intersperse text and links between attachments is available.

No inline attachements, you might remember we've been through the discussion.
There exists no proper option to achieve this.

For the image threads, attachments below the post are absolutely sufficient.

Go ahead and delete my image threads or move them to a board where they are allowed. :peace:

In my role as Devil's advocate: >:D
Tested saving attachments of 3 linked/embedded images here: Re: (Ultra Fractal) Barnsley formula.
Resized images to 720px and saved as PNG.
Ended up increasing bandwidth consumption.

I dislike/detest the jpeg compression of the thumbnail created for fractal attachments and will always choose to attach small enough images to bypass that "feature".

Any new rules for this situation?

Maximum 5000k in attachments per post and 15 posts per page is about 73 megabytes per page.
Worst case scenario if none of the attachments have thumbs created by the forum.

Edit:
Question for Fraktalist "Messages to display per page": Do you use 5 per page?
