I just downloaded and played around with Fragmentarium 1.0 yesterday.  Today I wanted to find a newer version and ran into 2.5.0.  I went to the page at https://github.com/3Dickulus/FragM/releases and downloaded the  Fragmentarium-2.5.0-190209-winex.7z file.  I unzipped it and ran the program but got error messages.  Version 1.0 works fine for me.  Why isn't 2.5.0 working?  What am I doing wrong?  I've attached an image of what I'm seeing.  Thanks for your help!

I just updated github with a couple of patches a few minutes ago, release tag 190217

I also ran the winex version here and loaded BioCube.frag using the includes from the package distribution...

what kind of GFX card and driver version?
Fragmentarium is not a toy, it is a very versatile tool that can be used to make toys ;)

Hi,

Thanks for responding.  I went to the new release page but I still see the version for 02/09.  Am I supposed to download all the files or just the 7z file?  I have an NVIDIA GeForce MX130 version 418.81 graphics card.  (I went to Control Panel to figure this out.  I don't know much about hardware.)  This is a brand new laptop that I just bought a couple weeks ago.

I've attached an image of what I'm seeing on the release page at Github.  I deleted the one I had on my hard drive and downloaded the one under 02/17 but I still get the same error messages.

Thanks again!

oops  >:( fixed  :-\

Laptops may get cooked by FragM :(

see this link before running http://blog.hvidtfeldts.net/index.php/2011/12/fragmentarium-faq/

the welcome screen shows when you first run FragM...
Quote
This is your first run of Fragmentarium.
Please read this:

(1) Fragmentarium requires a decent GPU, preferably a NVIDIA or ATI discrete graphics card with recent drivers.

(2) On Windows Vista and 7, there is a built-in GPU watchdog, requiring each frame to render in less than 2 seconds. Some fragments may exceed this limit, especially on low-end graphics cards. It is possible to circumvent this, see the Fragmentarium FAQ (in the Help menu) for more information.

(3) Many examples in Fragmentarium use progressive rendering, which requires Fragmentarium to run in Continuous mode. When running in this mode, Fragmentarium uses 100% GPU power (but you may use the 'Subframe : Max' spinbox to limit the number of frames rendered. A value of zero means there is no maximum count.)

You have been so incredibly helpful and I feel bad to keep coming to you with problems I'm having.  I think it's great that you're updating Fragmentarium.  I only just discovered it the other day and I love it.

I'm still getting error messages.  Here is a screenshot of what I'm seeing.

I'm running Windows 10.  I have 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, the latest drivers for the graphics card, Intel i7-8550U processor.

Thanks!

P.S.  Thanks for the link to the website.  I'm glad there is a website for this program.

If there's a problem with the program I'm more than happy to fix it or at the very least try to squash the bug, however, I must be able to reproduce the problem/issue/bug or there's nothing I can do  :-\

that error indicates that a "#version" statement is not in the right place, this problem doesn't seem to exist in the files I have here under the master repo

the fragment you have loaded in the image includes the following files...
Examples/Historical 3D Fractals/Mandelbulb.frag
Examples/Include/MathUtils.frag
Examples/Include/DE-Raytracer.frag
Examples/Include/3D.frag
Examples/Include/BufferShader.frag
...none of these contain a "#version" line ??? the default should be fine, as it is here.

Have you edited any of these files ? Try adding #version 110 as the first line in the loaded frag, then press the "Build" button, 110 works here with this fragment and is the default when no #version statement is found.

Also, the warning "Failed to resolve OpenGL functions required to enable AsmBrowser" will only show up if the GL surface format is less than 4.1 and/or nVidia is not detected but this is not critical and should not cause a failure on it's own (your card is nVidia and supports GL4.6 so this should not happen).

The MX130 is a laptop GPU so may not have all of the features that are found on full sized desktop GPUs, primarily a big fan and good air flow. ( you've been warned  >:D )

If the version found here https://github.com/Syntopia/Fragmentarium/releases/download/v1.0.0/Fragmentarium.-.Windows.-.V1.0.0.zip doesn't work then my incarnation probably won't either :(

Thanks for your help.  I'll try what you've recommended.  I majored in math and computer science in college 18 years ago but forgot everything, so I don't know anything about code, unfortunately.  I'll see if I can do what you've recommended.  Version 1.0.0 works just fine on my laptop.  That's how I found-out about Fragmentarium.  I love it!  I'll come back and let you know if I had any luck with the steps you outlined.

random idea: some laptops have 2 GPUs, integrated (low power consumption) and discrete (high performance).  there is usually a way to switch between them, possibly metadata attached in the EXE, but I don't know the details

Interesting, maybe there's a setting to specify preference on a per-app basis? but shouldn't it auto detect when the GL context is requested?

sorry, but I am just guessing too, need hardware for testing that  :-\

@fractalrock can you scroll to the top of the log window and post the first few lines so I can see what is being reported by the program, mine says...

NVIDIA Corporation GeForce GTX 760/PCIe/SSE2
Using GL version 4.6 Compatibility profile

Here is what mine says.  Is that what you meant?

Intel Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620
Using GL version 4.1 Compatibility profile

Thanks.

yup, that's not nVidia GFX card.
Am I supposed to download all the files or just the 7z file?  I have an NVIDIA GeForce MX130 version 418.81 graphics card.
just the 7z file for windows but again, It probably won't run on a Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 so you need to figure out how to access the MX130 as the default rendering device...

try this How to switch from Intel HD graphics to dedicated Nvidia graphics ...

or...How to Set Nvidia Graphic as PC Default Graphic in Windows 10/8.1/7

That fixed it!!  Thanks so much!  It's working now and I am so excited.  :-)

I really appreciate all the work you've done on this and that you would take the time to help me.

One more question and I'll try to stop coming up with questions to ask.  I'm having problems with the way the colors turn-out when I render.  For instance, the colors on the editor screen look different than what I'm getting after I render.  I've attached two images to this reply - one showing a screenshot of the editor, and the other is the fractal after rendering.  Thanks!

the only dumb questions are the ones that don't get asked ;) and this is a good one

that looks like Examples/Benesi/MengerSmooth.frag

at the bottom center of the Variable Editor is a Copy Settings button, hit that once and all the parameters are sent to the clipboard, then come here and paste them along with the name of the frag you have loaded into a PM to me or here in this thread, I assume you haven't tried editing any of the frags or applied any keyframes or easing curves yet and that it's one of the frags that comes with the package, I will run the frag and render an image using your settings and see if I can figure it out, it should look like what you see in the editor unless something has changed, that can happen if you have applied any keyframes or easing curves because those will change the view/object depending on what the timeline is set to.

many frags are very experimental and may have some odd behaviors, at a glance it looks like the problem is not enough iterations either in the raytracer or the object, I can't tell without the parameters and knowing what fragment you are working with.

I have also recently added a patch to the color widgets that is supposed to give realtime feedback when adjusting color values, you may have uncovered a bug  :-\ but that's a good thing
