The theme is chosen by the winner of the month May, Voulxe ... The new theme for June is:  "Is this Art"?

The rules:   
 -Only pure fractal renders with basic post editing allowed (like contrast, saturation..)
 - 2D and 3D fractals are allowed, but only one entry a member.  (for now)
 - The winner may choose the next months topic (own idea or chosen from "contest ideas"-thread.)
 - To participate, just post in this thread and attach the image to your post. (don't use the gallery)
    Please give it a good name, good resolution and add interesting info like software/formula used, parameter sharing is very welcome!

The other rules are the same as with the normal Image of the month contest.
In short:

We start the first day of the month, participate, during this time you can even change entry, whatever, until the end of the 14th of the month.  (A'dam time: Check your local time here:

Any entry after midnight will be removed without warning, even if the topic was not locked at the time. (my fault but I can't sit every month waiting till midnight) So midnight the 14th, no later.
Voting is allowed the entire period,  until the end of the 27th of the month. Same thing, no votes after midnigth the 27th.
On the 28th the winners will be announced and their fractals will have a place in the Gallery of Honor.

This is still in a trial period, so this is not final.  Improvements will follow along the way.

second iteration: z=z^2+p2*sin(sin(c))
third iteration: z=z^2+p3*c

Hard-Edged Fractals

This month's theme reminded me of being in art school, and the many discussions that came up based around that very question.
So I went searching for an algorithm that might reference the Modernist art movement of the early and mid 20th century, particularly De Stijl, Hard-Edged Painting, and abstract styles in general. At the time, A simple square (or several) on a canvas after an era of finely-crafted illustrative work was not accepted as 'Art' by every viewer...

What I settled on eventually is this square variant of the Kaliset formula
z <= abs(z)/(z.x*z.y) + c

Colored with 1d Accumulation Coloring with a cross-shaped trap.

I had this kind of image in mind linked with the theme (in my practice of this hobby I feel more like a craftsman than an artist - this is of course personal ; and I wanted to represent a piece of craft work)
But the concrete implementation has been more difficult than expected... so sorry for the edit
