I don't find this acceptable.
No, not acceptable at all.

I understood from Fraktalist that you can change your vote anytime until the last minute.  That is one of the reasons why I agreed to make the entire time available for voting because you can change it.  If this isn't so, then we have to return to the 14 day period after the closing of the contest.  I myself  do not participate because I want to be neutral and I also don't vote for the same reason.   I think that we have to establish better and clear ruling if we want this contest to be fun and has any reason or purpose to continue.

Some things that are brought up now are:
anonymus voting, and no voting for yourself, ability to change your vote.... and maybe others have more remarks and then we have to see if it is possible to implement that.   Not something I can do. And unfortunately all moderators are very busy at the time.

Tonight we start the next month contest.......We'll see

I have kids and grandparents here, so very limited time, will post dictatorship ruling tomorrow.

In short: if only admins & mods can vote for themselves or change previous vote, then to keep out gauge, we must not allow that.
Will test and find out.

If everyone can do both, let's keep the rules at a minimum and common sense at maximum.

I think the current rules are fine as they are with the addition of anonymous voting.

I will still submit images for this project but perhaps will refrain from voting on anything.

Just don't count self-votes, problem solved.

I think anonymous voting is working. Now only admins and mods can actually see who voted on what so users won't be able to complain or hold grudges. You will all have to accept the results without being able to scrutinize or critisize other users or their followers, as it should have been from the start.

okay, I just checked, currently only staff can vote for themselves.
this is unfair and hiding this is not the solution.
as common sense is to not count your own votes (even though I sympathize with your explanation 3d) staff is from now on no longer allowed to vote for their own posts, even though there is no option to disable that function for admins. let's just agree to not do this.

also I would like to revert the anonymous voting, because the idea of the whole thumbs up plugin was to give a quick and easy way to show appreciation in all boards of the forum, not only the contests.
It's much easier than writing "senseless" shortposts saying nothing but "great, love it". yet it still shows who was the one who appreciated that.
as we can't (without much work) change the plugins behaviour just for the contest threads, let's revert to show who voted.
3d, I'm not sure which setting that is, please revert it for me. thx!
reverting this will also make sure that anyone can check that staff didn't vote for themselves.
It also helps with pauldelbrots issue, so if we see that there are a surprising number of high votes by members who are not active or known in the forum, we will have a very close look and decide case by case.

additions:
-forcing to vote for all images is no good idea and can't be implemented without a lot of unnecessary work.
I vote for what is good with whatever rating I prefer. if there are 2 images that deserve gold, both get gold from me.
If I don't like an image, it gets no vote. Sorry paul, but the last one was just not really good. this months one I don't have to look twice to give it gold.
Why make it complicated?

-I checked, changing your vote is possible for regular members. just click on the same vote you used and it'll be removed. then click the new vote or leave it empty.
this means there is no problem with still allowing to vote throughout the month, which still is my preferred way of doing things.

lastly, and most important

This is supposed to be a bit of fun to encourage participation, an exercise in creativity.

Final update after quite some internal discussion:

The contests will remain as private voting and will be monitored very closely by staff while the rest of the site will have publicly visible voting records. This decision is a compromise in an effort to address concerns expressed by staff and users alike. If anyone has further concerns or problems with this please feel free to post them in the discussion threads for the site or the Image of the month discussion thread.

and now back to contest fun!

With these changes we can now all vote for ourselves (anywhere). The contest rules say nothing about this, so are we all now supposed to vote for ourselves if we want to win?

I do not see how taking away the ability to see who liked what (interesting feedback) is an improvement.

uhgh!!!  :fp:  I just can't leave this alone...

if you want to win then submit good pictures and if you feel that your picture is the best then vote yours up

I personally feel that we should also have a thumbs down -1 vote
so that we can express ourselves regarding the crappy ones too
for entries in the "worst fractal images of the year" calendar contest...
... but I didn't get the votes  :))  :head_batting:

I don't agree and think voting for yourself should not be possible (it was impossible before these changes, except for administrators like you), as apparently not everyone has the common sense not to vote for themselves, with the result that Claude had to share 2nd place (incorrectly) at last contest.

Introducing a -1 vote is the same as refining the 0-3 scale to a 0-4 scale, in case you're serious and not just being hostile to me for daring to offer suggestions for improvement.

Hmmmm a question about max. attachment size. The rules ask for good quality - if possible 4K - images, so I tried to upload a 5.8 MB 2160x2160 .png... not allowed  :D So, what do you want, small filesize or good quality?  :tease:

I think when we are at the end of the competition, all the winners have to submit the highest resolution for printing the calendar.  But  I will ask the FF-team ;)
