(Question) "zm49 (Stars)" locked - why?
« on: September 08, 2021, 11:46:37 PM »
I've seen, that my image thread "zm49 (Stars)" has been locked by someone.
why?
Are the images unwanted?
Problems with storage space (should I external link them)?
Should I generally begin an new thread after 500 replies?

Please explain - I'm confused!

I don't have a single clue why, but it just happened!

Shouldn't we all be told what is going on, so that we can avoid stepping on whatever landmine got CFJH? If there's some unwritten rule they broke I think it should either not be unwritten, or not have significant consequences if broken, one or the other. (AFAICT nothing in that thread violates any of the written rules for this site, hence the inference that it must have been an unwritten one.)

response in pm means I don't want my words to influence the opinion of others should input be required or requested

mostly out of a respect for privacy, CFJH may not want to share it either, for the same or perhaps different reasons, don't know that yet

regardless it is not meant for public consumption any more than your private messages

as for "the rules" our guidelines provide a framework, not a carved in stone set of laws, I'm sure you've read everything the site has on the subject, but, keep in mind that just because something isn't written down doesn't mean it would be a good thing, or, just because you can doesn't mean you should.

My point is that everything in that thread looks inoffensive to me, yet apparently CFJH has been punished because of something in it. How do I avoid running afoul of the same thing when even after skimming the recent posts to it again I can't see anything that I would expect anyone to have found offensive?

Evidently, you, or someone, found something offensive there anyway, which means I have a blind spot of sorts to this particular form of giving offense. That means I risk inadvertently giving that same form of offense myself. Hence my request: if giving this unobvious-to-me form of offense is going to have actual consequences (beyond "some random idiosyncratic person doesn't like me and ignores my threads from now on"; actual sanctions by admins and moderators) then I think I should know what line I need to avoid crossing to avoid incurring those consequences, and where that line has been drawn.

Otherwise, you are basically asking me to stroll through a minefield, without any kind of map or guide that would help me to not get a foot blown off or worse.

Except ... I suppose the offensive post could have been deleted before I had an opportunity to see it. I will be satisfied if you say that the post that triggered this was deleted and did run afoul of something obvious. That would spare me worries about hidden landmines.

On the other hand, it occurs to me that CFJH mustn't have found it obvious, or they either wouldn't have done it in the first place or wouldn't have been baffled enough now to ask here what was going on instead of just taking their lumps and carrying on. Hmm. Also, based on the non-deleted posts in the thread it would have been a huge swerve for CFJH to have suddenly done something offensive. On the gripping hand, there must have been some such swerve or why would this have happened now rather than a week ago, or six months, or a year? This incident was precipitated by something that must have differed in some way from everything that was posted to that thread that did not prompt a mod to lock it, after all. And since I'm not seeing any such thing, the obvious inference is that the offending post has indeed been deleted.

Still, it nags at me that CFJH didn't see this coming and avoid it, and that suggests to me that all of the other members here are at risk of the same thing happening to them ...

@pauldelbrot both of your feet will remain intact as long as you keep them firmly planted on the ground. get a grip buddy.

don't be ridiculous, nobody is being punished. but I know how to get your attention should I need it.

A little bit of transparency shouldn't hurt. No need to share all detail. But why the almost complete darkness?

The following is a purely hypothetical, made-up story. I know nothing about the specific events that happened.

The forum user in question might not be personally at fault for whatever it was that happened. Server logs might tell more, which is why a forum admin might have some extra information. At the same time, server logs aren't public information, because one doesn't want to enlarge the attack surface of server or users.

The above story is unlikely to be the truth, because I tend to be overly melodramatic with such things (hyperactive imagination and all that). But maybe it can serve as an illustration that sinister motives are not strictly required to explain this strange series of events.
