We're all supposed to have one ?? But how do I access it when uploading ??

1. go to main "Gallery"
2. on the second horizontal bar you will see "My Gallery" click on it!
3. start adding stuff

edit: "Add Picture" panel has a "User Gallery" section below the main section

That doesn't work - if I do not choose a category I get an error, if I do choose a category it just gets put in said category, still no user gallery for me.

then you should see it in the "User Gallery" section in the "Select Category" pull down menu

So I have to create one ? All previous info I could find says all users have one by default.....

Yes, your user gallery exists... it just doesn't have anything in it, it's completely empty until you create categories and start adding images.
They will show up in the "Recent Pictures" list on the site home page.
There are some options under "Settings" next to "Add Category" in the Gallery Admin Panel.

Show top rated pictures on the main page
Show the most recent items on the main page
Show the most viewed items on the main page
Show the most commented items on the main page
Show random featured images on the main page
Show the index blocks on top of gallery

These let you customize what your gallery front page looks like
