(Problem) Incident last night
« on: May 02, 2021, 01:30:49 AM »
I would appreciate an explanation for why I, and at least one other user whom I know of, were locked out of the site for a lengthy interval last night. There had been no prior notice of any kind of maintenance, and I hadn't done anything unusual that could possibly have warranted being locked out for any other reason, even temporarily. The message I got claimed an announcement would be forthcoming, but I see no sign of it, either here or in "Announcements" (the most obvious home for such). If it was posted in an unobvious place, please reply to this post with a link to it, or at least the name of the forum that contains it.

The message I got also intermittently claimed that I was being locked out for somehow causing excessive server load, which I took to mean bandwidth and/or CPU. I had not done anything unusual that might have such an effect, just occasional reloads to check for new material and page loads to catch up on some new material, statistically not different than on any random Friday. If my machine was nevertheless generating excessive traffic to the site, rest assured that it was doing so without my knowledge or permission, and even my diagnostic tools showed no unusual network activity during the period of the lockout (else I would have immediately pulled the network plug and investigated the cause). Any confirmation that it was doing so will result in my conducting a quite thorough investigation at my end, starting with malware scans. Details of the excessive traffic's content would be helpful in narrowing down a possible culprit, especially if it pointed to a specific malware strain as the cause (as then I could likely go straight to appropriately-tailored removal instructions and skip a lot of googling). In any event I will ensure, to the best of my abilities, that it does not happen again (albeit I thought I already was, as the anti-malware precautions I take are massive, including adblocking and whitelisting scripts as well as ignoring email attachments if I was not expecting to receive them, to say nothing of having AV and being very circumspect about downloading executables of any kind).

Apologies, if warranted.

As far as I know, this message was present for everyone, including people who were not logged in. It was very unlikely to be your fault, and probably either a server hardware / software problem, or someone trying to interfere with the website for whatever reason.

as unassigned  said "including people who were not logged in." It was just a general issue with the site or server

I saw the outage, too, but assumed it was either random everyday chaos (machine failures do happen) or some internet crooks trying to do something shady (script kiddies do happen).

I missed the outage, and I was fine.

I see a lot of speculation but where is the promised official announcement about what happened? There's no sign of it now after over 24 hours.

Maybe they don't know what happened yet? Maybe they haven't bothered because it's fixed now and therefore literally doesn't matter? Servers go down sometimes.

At the time they explicitly promised that an announcement would be forthcoming explaining things. The apparent absence of such an announcement is troubling, and is liable to start undermining trust in them if not rectified soon. Plus, I think we deserve to know why we were locked out for hours and, especially, whether or not we can expect more such interruptions. Was this a one-off event or a sign of things to come? Without the promised official statement we simply don't know.

I'm just going to let this percolate for a while to see where the conspiracy theory goes  :gum:

This was posted in a fractal facebook group about this error after a user had written himself into a frenzy (about 15 messages in 2 hours one after another) why HE was locked out and it ended with:
Quote
to every single other person in this entire benighted world:
You do not have the right to have a task take me 90 minutes that I expected would only take me five, given that I am not hopelessly incompetent at said task (and I'm not).
You will pay me some kind of restitution, in some form, for my frustration and wasted time.
You will do so willingly, or I will find some way to take it, but either way, you WILL pay.
And the longer I am obstructed from completing my five-minute task, the proportionally greater that toll shall be.

With that in mind I think it was definitely him  :skeptical:
If I were a server I would from time to time just lock him out just to watch the drama unfold - so that's my guess 🤣😉

I think the forum board owns me some money for my time spend on the forum, as compensation for all the love and effort. The first is almost priceless, so therefore I won't count the time when the forum was broken by unknown or hidden forces. I'll sue them for being blocked from this site, preventing me from demanding what belongs to me.

If this one way contract is breached, actions will be taken.

p.s. money can be interchanged with compensation in maths, codes, pretty pictures or replies to me post. Thank you!

I don't think you are taking the inconvenience this has caused serious enough - heads will roll - it will be the French revolution all over again.

I've already said over on FB that I won't pay - so far - no retributions

It's 2018 all over again!

Flashback to Paul's angry post at the time, to my very mildly sarcastic post referencing it, and finally to this poor Photoshop job of the forum header:

Paul, are you ever going to acknowledge your proclivity towards conspiracy theories, and stop hounding the poor admins everytime you think you've been wronged? Hasn't this happened sufficiently many times yet?

I suspect that Paul does not have as much free choice in these matters as most of you are thinking. He might be sufficiently unlucky that he cannot just choose to be calm.

(And sorry again, Paul, for speaking about you as if you weren't around. Let me just vaguely say that I have gone through occasional "interesting" phases in my life; not an experience I would recommend to anyone, but it left me with a bit of understanding for such matters.)

This thread has become unproductive, and seems to be devolving into personal harassment. Unwarranted harassment at that. Nothing in the thread-starting post, or any of my other posts to this thread, accused the admins of anything; the only two questions I raised were a) what, exactly, happened and b) where is the announcement the admins said they would make?

Or is it now taboo to ask any kind of questions at all about the functioning of the site? Are we to just pretend that we didn't see anything and that everything has operated perfectly without hiccups, regardless of the evidence of our own senses, as there will be no official acknowledgement otherwise and any failure to maintain a pretense that nothing happened will bring an unofficial mob down on one?

If y'all are worried about conspiracy theories, in my opinion you are going about the task of preventing them in the wrong way. Transparency, including swift acknowledgements of incidents and statements of their non-conspiratorial causes, is empirically proven to be superior in that regard to official silence, stonewalling, and/or denials coupled with unofficial goon-squads roughing up anyone who asks the "wrong" questions. That is simply a matter of historical fact, by the way -- don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger.
