In case of strange forum behaviour - major testing going on
« on: September 14, 2017, 02:28:00 PM »
We are about to setup 2 larger modification, one for search engine optimization today.
Then we will try an alternative gallery.

We just made a backup - if things go wrong, anything you write from now until this announcement disappears might be lost when we have to revert to that backup.
But we'll do our best to avoid that.

We'll keep you posted!

both setup.

Seo mod seems to work properly now. (after I uninstalled the old Pretty URLS mod - it has it's own)
we now have a proper sitemap in the footer.
it also added the nice "similar topics" below each thead we know from ff.com

Multimedia Gallery.
It does not work wit the seo mods pretty url system, get 404 errors, wrong link. deactivated these pretty urls, works now.
It is installed parallel to the old gallery, in parallel.

things I noticed - might be changed in settings yet to discover. sock, feel free to play around.

--image size too small when clicking on a thumbnail. only something like 640*480. No setting found to change this.

--full view only through click on small icon top right. not the intuitive click on image which does nothing.

-"loading notes" even if there are no notes, wastes time. note feature is nice, but really usefull?

--every user can createno private user galleries.

--not found an easy way to post images in screen fitting size to the board. no option to copy a ready-to-go link with [img...] as in old gallery.

-how does "subscribe" work? what happens if I subscribe?

--Testuser cant see any albums, even though permissions are set properly gallery adds another layer of permission nightmares

---regular users can't create their own user gallery. permissions are either edit ALL galleries or none. showstopper. :(

-in overview https://fractalforums.org/index.php?action=multimedia the filecount says 0, even though there are images in the sub-albums and you can'T even upload images in those folders that say zero. what's the point of displaying that number? found setting

++ notification by pm from system if a user comments your image.

---viewcount is wrong. it displays the true number double. 5 views display as 55. 15 views as 1515.

-gallery overview not responsive

--slideshow not working, not sliding, also showing in small window but with ugly system-default scrollbars (vertical&horizontal)

if the list stays that long we should stick with the other gallery and just disable automatic topic creation as default for betatest.

please add your feedback. things you like/dislike.

I'm at work, but uploaded the wallpaper from my work computer as a test.

I'll have more time to test this weekend.  Still reeling from the family situation.

Overall, I do like the other gallery better for many of the reasons you listed already.

I wonder if limiting gallery posts to 1 per day would limit the "so-called spam" from the threads it creates automatically?

If we combine limited posting  (as on the current site) with a dedicated board for gallery posts so prefixes are universal on the "image board", it may be better.

One bug I noticed - I tried reporting Test User's post to see how that feature worked, and got "Your session timed out while posting. Please go back and try again" and despite reloading various pages with a "hard refresh" - it persisted.

That really should work, but it's not a deal breaker.

An odd issue - in the admin area, the first thing it presents you with is a box for "Recent Submissions" - but it's empty.

Very strange, indeed!

I disabled notes and the alert no longer interrupts the image loading.

Notes can be placed in the description or comments.  Seems redundant to me, but if you like it - turn it back on!

I'm running out of time for today.  I'll have more time to explore it's settings in the morning, but for now I'll be in and out too frequently to focus on any detailed tasks   ::)

That really should work...

Well, somebody reported my image - said it wasn't Art!

Da Noive of some people.

But that just proves reporting images works, but reporting comments still gives the error.

At least their strange embed code works!

I still think the other gallery is better in many ways.  I don't even like the thumbnails in this gallery.  They crop the thumbnails!!  I guess they think that's Artsy in some sort of Modern Art way - but I think it is not the way such things should be handled.

May not be much need to keep experimenting.  I have already found more than enough strikes against this one compared to the other that I am going to be hard to convince this one is worth keeping.

I see almost no advantages at all and many drawbacks.

The only advantage I saw was it's prefix play stuff so gallery posts can still make threads - but it seems we are going to lose the threads  (and in the process lose too much critical forum functionality for my tastes on the Recent Posts page), and that makes this gallery redundant at best.

I say why wait?  Get rid of it now.  See if we can commission that mod to make prefixes work with the other gallery  (or at least confirm my suspicion that such a mod is not possible due to the total unfamiliarity with the other products' code).

OK - the extremely odd way I was seeing thumbnails made me think it was cropping them to be some kind of Modern Art stylish gallery.

It is not!

It is worse.

The thing does not know how to resize an image!!    C:-) :siren :firey: :hopping_mad: :firey: :siren C:-)

I attached 2 screenshots.  Notice the zoom level displayed on the top bar of the browser.

Once I noticed the missing right border on the thumbs, I tried resizing with the zoom controls and had to zoom out ridiculously to see the full thumbnail.

Makes more sense, but the end result shows a good reason to not trust this gallery and whatever other surprises may be lurking.

Still can't report comments, only images.

I'm not sure why it should be like this - everything else from smhPacks seems to work very nicely.  Maybe I just have high standards for gallery software?

I may agree that the other gallery is not very good and could use a lot of work - but none of it is fails to function as advertised.
