Retinamandelbrot for Windows
« on: February 22, 2021, 04:52:15 PM »
Hi, a Windows beta version of Retinamandelbrot is now available for download on

http://www.retinamandelbrot.com/winapp.html

I would be glad about any comment and/or suggestion.
There is also a new gallery with high resolution samples: http://fhoermann.org/retinamandelbrot/gallery.php
The corresponding position (with settings) can be opened in Retinamandelbrot with the provided link (once it is installed).

Best,
  Fritz

Nice!

Not having Microsoft Windows, I tried in Wine 6.0 on Linux (Debian Bullseye, current testing), the graphics are scrambled with each of the EXEs.

Another small suggestion: put everything in the zip inside a folder, so that files aren't scattered everywhere if you are not careful extracting.

Tried to run on windows. Seems to be a great program.
About it:
I prefer just a zip file instead of a installer one. Like a portable program.
Why 3 executables (mandelbrot, mandelbrot8 and mandelbrot9)?
I don't know if it is to run inside a web page or is it a standalone program?
If it is a standalone program, would be nice that it would be inside a component that could be runned without to be fullscreen.
I don't see a close option.
liked very much the save as automaticaly the par and image at the same time feature, but if possible, invert the sequence of day month year to year month day because it would be sequentialy on folder after saved.
I didn't understand how to load image or link from your gallery. Suggestion: put the parameters file on a zip file into your gallery page.
Thanks a lot for releasing.
Attatched my first image with it.

Yes, I do agree, an option to exit the program would be nice. Alt+F4 works, but still...
I have noted a problem. The image I see in the monitor at full screen is not the same as the image I get when i save at high resolution. The framing is different. Compare the first image, a screenshot taken at 1920*1080 with the second image, a render at 2k (downscaled at 1024).
It seems like only the central part of the image is rendered when saving the fractal image.

Anyway, I made a render at 16k of the fractal, cropped it, downscaled it, and tinkered a bit with exposure and colour curves in Gimp.
It is here below.

@julofi changing the aspect from 16/9 to 1/1 causes an "apparent" change in the zoom, the square one will appear zoomed a bit because of h/w ratio, just like changing FOV in 3D view

@3DickUlus that is the explanation of what is happening. Still, it is an undesirable behaviour.
The program works only in full screen mode. In most cases that is 16:9 or 16:10. There are not square monitors. However it only saves the fractal images as squares where only the central part of what you see in the monitor is rendered. So, an option to render in the same proportion as the monitor should be added, or a square render where is shown everything that you see in the monitor plus the upper and lower bands that you don't see in the monitor.

mandelbrot8.exe and mandelbrot9.exe might work better with 4K resp. 8K equipment (see discussion under http://www.retinamandelbrot.com/winparameters.html "internal canvas size".) In most cases mandelbrot.exe should work just fine. (It seems not with windows emulators on linux though... )

Yes, I see the problem, it seems that I got used to these square images... Thanks for the suggestion. I will insert an option to save the images with the same aspect ratio as on the screen. Also a non full-screen window...

This is a curious behaviour... It seems to be that in the OpenGL driver there are different default values for parameters like GL_PACK_ROW_LENGTH or GL_PACK_ALIGNMENT (also in the icons there is a lag between rows...)

The menu should be scrollable either with the mouse wheel, click and drag, or with touch gestures (on a touch screen). Does it not work?
