That difference in size of the actual rendered image makes for an increase in render-time of about the double. Hence I would not render to save at 1:4 when 1:3 gives similar results since a complex render (especially with transparencies and DoF) might take many hours longer...

Cool -we are talking about the same thing with different reasons.

Almost all my saved images are 1920x1080, rendered 7680x4320 and saved as m3i with image option set, mainly because the fractal has dots and other fuzz at max size (which disappear when scaled at 1:4)

7680x4320 has 16 times more pixels than 1920x1080 and therefore takes 16 times longer.
Some of my renderings take an hour or more.
However, once saved, I can reload the m3i and do post render actions to the image without needing to wait all that rendering time (e.g. rescale, recolor, do more postprocess actions).

That's settled then! ;)  :thumbs:

My renders usually don't have too much fuzz and stuff (maybe I more often than you use more 'clean'-rendering formula-combinations) so 1:3 is enough and sometimes I even can get away with 1:2. But I find quality wise most is done by the calculation-settings, no idea how the programmers arrived at the standard setting MB3D shows at startup ;)
Attached my render-settings in case you're interested.

Hello FF & WAUthethird;

Thank you very much for the software!  I downloaded it, told OSX it was OK to run it, but it does not launch.  Digging in to startwine, I find that the path indeed does not exist:
Code: [Select]
echo $BUNDLERESOURCEPATH=/private/var/folders/b5/fm68nv353s1575m56zsr2y840000gn/T/AppTranslocation/95769AEE-7777-4794-9CDC-D7E2B73446FC/d/Mandelbulb3Dv199Mac.app/Contents/MacOS/../Resources
wine: cannot find 'C:/winebottler/Mandelbulb3D.exe'
and:
Code: [Select]
$ ls /private/var/folders/b5/fm68nv353s1575m56zsr2y840000gn/T/AppTranslocation/95769AEE-7777-4794-9CDC-D7E2B73446FC/d/Mandelbulb3Dv199Mac.app/Contents/MacOS/../Resources
ls: /private/var/folders/b5/fm68nv353s1575m56zsr2y840000gn/T/AppTranslocation/95769AEE-7777-4794-9CDC-D7E2B73446FC/d/Mandelbulb3Dv199Mac.app/Contents/MacOS/../Resources: No such file or directory

The "AppTranslocation" directory is actually empty.  This looks like some new security thing, perhaps?
Code: [Select]
$ sw_vers
ProductName: Mac OS X
ProductVersion: 10.12.6
BuildVersion: 16G1918

I then re-directed the BUNDLERESOURCEPATH to where the directory actually resides:
Code: [Select]
BUNDLERESOURCEPATH="/Applications/Mandelbulb3Dv199Mac/Mandelbulb3Dv199Mac.app/Contents/MacOS/../Resources"
I followed the "MacOS/../Resources" as this is how the variable expands in the shipping code.  Then I took the ".." out:
Code: [Select]
BUNDLERESOURCEPATH="/Applications/Mandelbulb3Dv199Mac/Mandelbulb3Dv199Mac.app/Contents/Resources"but I still only get:
Code: [Select]
wine: cannot find 'C:/winebottler/Mandelbulb3D.exe'
I am looking about at this general issue with wine, but so far have foud nothing.  Have any of you slayed this beast or do you know how to fix it?

THANK YOU

Clark

Thanks for the report! I've done some researching, and this link should explain the problem: https://www.synack.com/blog/untranslocating-apps/

TL;DR: In more recent versions of MacOS, (starting in 10.12) Apple introduced a new feature to Gatekeeper that physically rewrites applications that are unsigned/downloaded from the internet, that being App Translocation. App Translocation prevents applications from modifying themselves (even if it's just metadata), which means that Mandelbulb3Dv199 on Mac will not run.

So, a quick solution: Move the .app bundle to Applications before running it for the first time. However, if you have run that particular app bundle before, it has been rewritten. If you've done that, you should re-extract the .app bundle (from the .zip file you downloaded) directly into Applications, and then run it. If an unsigned application has been manually moved to Applications, Gatekeeper does not apply App Translocation, which then lets it run.

I'll be trying to find a permanent solution that's built into the .app over the next few days. Hopefully this works for you!  :)
