We have had many internal debates on this point, and it's now time to see what our members want!

The downloads area on V1 of Fractal Forums has a few advantages and a few disadvantages.

I like it because it allows our valued contributors to easily upload their creations at will and it maintains a long standing tradition for hosting stuff.

The drawback is that it is awkward to navigate and some people think it is ugly.

We could use threads, but our contributors would have to be assigned special ftp access to the site so they can upload and post direct links.  A couple extra steps for them, but attachments would be difficult to allow the needed file formats and file sizes for some items.

The other part of this question is whether we should mirror all of the hosted content on V1 here.

That would keep it all together, but much of it is old and gets very little attention.

We are always open to alternatives, so please post your feedback here!

This is the sort of thing we need community input for so we can make this site as good as possible for everyone.

I allowed multiple votes per user in the poll so you can say things like "Mirror the old site using threads only" or "Only new stuff in the Downloads area only" or some other combination plus your own original thoughts.

Thanks for any input and for helping shape the future of Fractal Forums!

For me it really does not matter much how you arrange the download area, as long as there is one! So much gets lost in the threads... I think manageability from the admin team's point of view is paramount. As long as I can find the downloads, I'm happy ;)

As for the downloads available on v1: as long as those are still available I see no need to transfer them here. Like you say, many downloads there are old and maybe no longer interesting, on the other hand, somehow the newer versions of Mandelbulb3D for instance are much less stable on my computer than the 1.89 version.
I would love a new home for updated mb3d-formulas on here though:) And maybe also one for Fragmentarium ones  :D

Also I would very much appreciate a section dedicated to download-links for fractal-programmes not directly downloadable from FF.

Funny you should mention that.

About MB3D - We still have to hear from Andreas on how he wants us to handle his baby.  I'd hate to offend him by presenting it in a way he does not approve of   C:-)

Personally, I agree that all old versions of MB3D and all the new formula stuff should be hosted here.

But this is still just a Public Beta Test phase of FractalForums and we have lots of time to finalize things and make them as good as we can   O0

just to clarify:
Download threads would be sticky threads that remain on top of the program's section.
So for mandelbulb3d it would be the top-thread in that category.
And in the first post of that thread there would always be the link to the current version on top, impossible to miss.

I am the one who opposed a dedicated download area , because it is used for 1-2 programs only and the downloads themselves are not even located in the programs section but in the top menu "downloads". I always struggled to find the most recent mandelbulb3d download. You need to click 4 times to actually reach the download-link and the design of the pages leading there is so cluttered (and not easily configurable by us).

a simple link to the current version would be so much easier..

edit: sockratease, please add "sticky" threads to your description in the first post to avoid confusion
or even better, exchange the biased

The alternative is using sticky threads that include a big downloadlink to the latest version in the always updated first post.
And a version history+changelog in the second post.

The ftp-problem is not a problem as we discussed before - and rather irrelevant for our users.

@Sockratease I'd be willing to spend some time tracking down download-links with all the info you specify. I just hope I'm not doing the same as ten others :}

@Frank Fractalist I see what you mean, though I myself never found the download area really troublesome. But in the case of threads-only I would very much like to have the download-links also available on here just like the one in Sockratease's link. I so very much like to see a program mentioned in a list and just go and try it without ever having heard about it :) If they are hidden in links I just never might come across them...

I don't think this is a "One way or the other" decision.

There is no harm I can see in having both ways exist at the same time.

I often say that "Too Much Is Better Than Not Enough!"

We're just trying to see if there is a preference among the members.

The ftp-problem is not a problem as we discussed before - and rather irrelevant for our users.

But it is relevant to anyone who will be uploading.

Yes, that's just 2 or 3 people at the moment.  But we hope that grows and I think it's relevant to those people and they should know what we would be asking of them up front.

Where would you prefer that information be placed in the first post?

I can't see leaving it out, but have no problems rephrasing any part of the post.

To answer the original question - with direct links to the files, preferably hosted on here directly and full descriptions of everything available - bit like how it was on the original FF, only preferably even better.
All submissions to go through complete review before being made publicly available.
Alternatively leave the thread/attachments as they are with a warning that none have been checked and then admins can add the popular/useful/safe/checked stuff to a proper downloads as above in their own time ;)
