Greetings,

I want to introduce everyone to my formula set for Chaos Pro 4.0 JDMandels.cfm.  This package will allow you to create the Mandelbrot Butterfly and its inverse I call the Mandel Shield, Julia Sets for both those figures, the Willendorf figure (coloring in everywhere current size  < last size), and highlight Repeaters for period 1-6, with the standard Mandelbrot and Julia formulas included for comparison.  The following instructions are also in the attached ZIP file as a PDF.

Good Luck, JJD

Instructions for JDMandels.cfm
formula set for Chaos Pro

Installation

These instructions assume that Chaos Pro 4.0 is already installed, and they use my own installation under Windows 7 as an example.  These formulas have been tested on a number of machines with no problems, but I cannot guarantee they won’t happen on yours.  If there are any issues; I’d like to hear about it on the forums.  In the meanwhile; this will be the guide.

Once the ZIP file is extracted to somewhere you can find, the process involves copying the CFM file to the Compiler folder that Chaos Pro is looking for – and that’s it!  But finding the right folder might be tricky, or it could be hidden, and so on.  I can go from my Start menu to my User folder, double click on AppData then Roaming, and Chaos Pro 4.0 is one of the choices.

After double clicking on the Chaos Pro 4.0 folder (assuming you have found it); you can double click on Formulas then go to the folder called Compiler and open it.  You might have better luck searching for the term ‘Compiler’ on your hard drive, but you may need to have ‘include hidden and system files’ checked for it to be found.

Once you have found the folder ‘Compiler’ for your User ID; simply copy the CFM file JDMandels.cfm to this folder and you are done.  The next time you open Chaos Pro; the new formulas will appear as one of your options.  You can choose from among the algorithms on that list, such as ‘MandelButterfly–layers’ in the screenshot image below.

Options and Parameters

Once the CFM file is in the correct folder; JDMandels.cfm should be one of the options, and clicking on it should open up the menu for individual formulas in that set, as pictured in the screenshot image above.  That image also shows the options available with the ‘MandelButterfly –Layers formula with optimal start settings selected.  Note that Periodicity and Elimination are both turned off to assure that all sections of the Butterfly will appear.

When you have selected an area to zoom in on; you may find that certain regions will render just fine with no degradation or missing areas, when speedups are re-enabled, but in general the Willendorf, Butterfly, or Shield figures will render much more quickly than their Mandelbrot Set counterparts.  But there is another option on the layered versions.

The formulae with the word layers at the end have an additional option, as pictured above.  There we can remove layer of the overlay one at a time, in order to see what is found underneath.  This is like other parameters in Chaos Pro, where you can have this value change over a number of frames in a video sequence, so that layer addition or removal can be animated.  The ‘layers to remove’ option will work with any positive whole number.

That’s it for now.

Good Luck!
