$f(z_0)=\frac{1}{2 \pi i} \int_{C} \frac{f(z)}{z-z_0}dz$

$f^{(n)}(z_0)=\frac{n!}{2 \pi i} \oint_{C} \frac{f(z)}{(z-z_0)^{n+1}}dz$

latex support

For a minute there I thought I was on one of those Naughty Adult Forums I help out with

This was on our list for things to do and it slipped my mind!

I have no idea how Christian implemented it on V1 and he is still "on vacation" - we will have lots of questions for him when he returns!

Remember that this is just a beta test and there will be a lot of things not done, not yet done, done incorrectly, and some will even be overdone!

Study stupidity, kids. It's not getting smarter out there - Frank Zappa

I've checked in FF.com, we have these installed:

Mimetex  http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1111
jsTeX tag http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=419471.0

Both are outdated and it's questionable if they work with our smf 2.0.14
As Mimetex doesn't even work properly on the mod-page itself, I suggest we try jsTeX.

Or does anyone know a better solution?
I've never used LaTex. So I don't know what's good.

I don't really like math. I prefer to see this as an art and "cosmos"-forum.

The TeX extension of the old forum leaves a bit to be desired. Its output wasn't pretty and it's *not* ready for the, to me, very desirable dark mode.
Having proper TeX support would be great, imo.
I also like Markdown but it looks like, by choosing this platform, you already decided against that.
Oh and while we're at it, why are there separate tags for YouTube and Vimeo? Why not a tag that's more flexible? That seems weird to me.

I never understood how all that LaTex stuff worked

If there is a better way, we'd be glad to try it.  We chose smf forums for the familiarity of both members and staff with it's functionality.

Trying a new forum software would require a learning period which may be longer for staff than members!  But it is certainly possible for the future if it becomes obvious that we can do better.

There are not many good mods that add easy video embedding.

There is the one we also use at ff.com - but this only gives you "auto" embedding, which automatically makes EVERY videolink you post into a video - even if you don't want to. even if you want to make a textlink like this.
So we chose the only good alternative we found. And this has those 3 different tags, youtube, vimeo and imgur.
If anyone finds a better (and actively maintained) modification we're happy to give it a try!

I have no idea what expansions there are but for LaTeX I think there is, for instance, MathJax ? It gives some really nice-looking non-image-based results. No idea if that's addable to the forum or anything.

If we have the issues with Mathjax (due to it being old and unmaintained) and the other one Frank mentioned, and if you can get a folder of the images needed, we should be able to make them smileys for ease of use.

Then possibly make a sub folder or something to keep them together.

I'm not sure how to integrate the system into smf the way it is intended to be used, but we can make our own far easier than use somebody else's.

It should be possible to create a sub folder for them within the current smileys.  If not, we make it an optional smiley set and you can change the smiley set in your profile, then use it that way.

My point is that this can be done, but it wont happen quickly or exactly as it's implemented on V1 of Fractal Forums.

TeX is a highly flexible text formatting language. You're not gonna get by with emoticons. That's just not feasible.

as neither me nor sockratease know much about latex, I suggest you guys discuss yourself which of the alternatives provided at smf you would like us to set up and then we will do our best to get things working.
