Welcome again to the second iteration of Fractalforums!

We have added quite a few big changes. To give you a little overview of what is new, here is a list of some of the bigger features:

Shoutbox - Realtime Chat
-at the bottom of each FF-page you now find our shoutbox for fast realtime-communication.
-You can switch of the "new-message" sound.
-You can privately whisper to other users by writing "@username:" in front. no one else (besides username and admins) can read these whispers.

disabled, as it caused problems for many and wasn't used that much.

New responsive theme "Yorky"
We chose a new theme for a modern look that is also responsive and works well on mobiles.
-It has a dark/light version, switch on top right (the small drop-icon)
-You can change the main color with a click on the little cog-wheels right of the search bar.

For those who prefer the classic FF1-look, just go to "profile/look and layout" and change the theme to "Dilber Multicolor"

Drag and Drop upload of your attachments and images
When posting you now have a box at the bottom where you can simply drag and drop your images/files you want to attach.
more info here https://www.smfpacks.com/au/

New Recent Topics button

Finally - the thing that started it all.
Hit that button and it shows you a list of all the recent activity.
What's new about this? Well, things aren't marked read here, so this means the list always looks the same and gives the perfect overview of what is currently going on in the fractal community.
Strong recommendation to try this as your bookmark!

Personalized Image threads
As an optional alternative to the gallery system that you know from FF1, we introduce a new way of sharing your images.
Simply create your own thread in this child-board
Instead of starting a new thread for each image, you just add a new post and use our drag&dop attachement uploader to add an image (or up to 5 per post).
We increased the thumbnail imagesize so you actually have a nice preview.
edit: An inspiration for this idea was the this thread as well as "Mandelbrot Safari" (which also shows why we should use our upload-system instead of external hosting)

The big advantage over the gallery is that every time you post one of your images, all your previous images will automatically be re-viewed by interested visitors - easy access. Your old images don't get lost.

Only rule: Only the thread-starter is allowed to post images in his thread.

httpS
we switched to secure browsing to improve safety

No more advertisments
We decided to go without annoying ads.
All expenses of the update and server costs are currently payed by the FFteam out of our own pockets.
Any support from you is highly appreciated - paypal@fractalforums.org

((Like system (not yet working as we found an even better plugin to be implemented soon)
We know this is controversial, but we think we found a nice way to make use of the pro's and discard the contras.
You can now Like posts.
You can not "downvote" posts. Also the name of each user who liked a post will be displayed. This should take care of abuse.
You can filter the forum search to only show posts with a certain number of likes - if enough people use the system this will make it easier to find the good information hidden in the mass of 'unimportant' posts.
The whole thing makes it much easier for new members to see on a glance if a source/information is trusted by the community. ))

Mature Content in The Gallery
There is now an option to mark images as having Mature Content in our Gallery. It can be in any category but threads will not be generated in the forum. Mature Images are protected and viewers must agree they are willing to view it before it will be revealed.

Minor Changes

-Private Messaging: Show Messages as conversation threads, find settings here
-yorky: scroll to the top with the little arrow on bottom right.

...have fun discovering the things not mentioned here

If you have any questions on a function, or something doesn't work as expected - let us know here, we're happy to help!

YES! I really wasn't expecting something like this to have COMPLETELY secure pages, but this is great! Thanks so much for taking the time to switch to https!

Thanks for noticing and taking the time to say something!

We're trying to make this site the best we can.

:) Everything looks great! I wish you great success and look forward to a long mutually beneficial relationship between FF and MM!

One question? Am I missing something or are you still having issues with the dark theme? I know many of us would prefer it over the light theme!

Hi 1maniac!
The dark/light responsive theme are up and running fine. Here's how top activate it:
https://fractalforums.org/discuss-fractalforums/how-to-switch-between-classic-ff1-and-responsive-ff2-theme
We chose to keep the classic design as default in the beginning to make the transition  experience a bit smoother.

Are there some threads on V1 that could inspire us?
How about a few links to V1 threads that stand out as good examples?

The first one that comes to mind is Paul DelBrot's Mandelbrot Safari thread, but there is no point linking to it since he used external hosting and it happened to be photobucket - who recently ended their plan that allowed 3rd party hosting of images - so that thread is dead.

Which is the only good argument for allowing images as attachments in threads I have heard!

I can't think of any other examples, sorry.

But the same thing could be accomplished in a user gallery  (user galleries do not create threads in the forum) and you'd get on site hosting which would be more permanent and the collected thread could be created in exactly the same way.

Yeah - I'm sidetracking and posting a point here that is related to a discussion in another thread.

Just part of the Chaos that is FractalForums   :-*

added Mr. alexx' "my fractal universe thread" and Pauldelbrots Mandelbrot Safari - those two actually inspired me to the idea of image-threads.

sock, let's keep these discussions in the appropriate place please.

I would be more likely to upload images to a user gallery if the limit was at least as much as a single post.
Max 5 images with total of 5 Megabytes.

Is there a setting so User Gallery images are not displayed in the main thumbnail gallery?
If I want to upload technical drawings to illustrate a concept, I do not want them displayed in the gallery as "ART"

Upside is ability to place images inline (so text then image then more text then image etc...)

First post by mr.alexx in my fractal universe used 12 images.
Plus 2 embedded videos located below the images.

If he followed the guidelines of using attachments or inline images hosted on V2, current limits on this site would not have allowed his starting post.

Last two posts I was under the incorrect impression that the gallery limit was one image per day.

Curious. How much per year is this costing the team?

we're at roughly 150? per year for hosting.
