That's indeed a great improvement.  I like emoticons, especially in comments to take the edge of things. A bit more emotion, to cheer up the atmosphere  ;)  So Sabine, even if we are the only ones using them, it will brighten up our lives :D

Greetings and enjoy your holiday  :cheer:

I cannot resist grinning madly when I am seeing this playful waste of bandwidth and screen space. You youngsters would not be able to live in a world where 320 by 200 pixels were advertized as "high resolution", and when being continuously online with 1000 bits per second was considered an excessive luxury.

Not everything is getting worse as time passes. :)

...You youngsters ...

Started online with a 9600 Baud modem, a second hand XT and then second AT and Hercules monochrome monitor, shuffling large floppy disks, and visiting BBS's  ;)

And though while writing this I go all nostalgic hearing in my mind the modem dial-out and then connecting... I do really Really agree that not All changed for the worse ;)

So basically I am grinning with you with regard to this decadence  :highfive:

My first modem was 300 baud no K no M just 300 baud, the cpu ran at 0.89Mhz and 320x200 was hires,
this "waste of bandwidth and screen space" is actually just filler for what would otherwise be unused bandwidth and screenspace... makes me grin too

my favorite?  :brain: :dalek: :kill: no I couldn't possibly pick just one

I remember the early days very well. The first colored image from friends from the USA took forever, line by line :) But we were thrilled!  :D  My first computer I bought together with my brother it was one object, everything integrated, monitor very small, floppydisk, all in one. I wish I still had it ;).  The next one was on a computer fair it cost 2000 fl.  An expert, a friend of a friend installed it. He did it wrong, formatted it for about 24 hours and the computer was gone. Right   >:D Never saw the expert again.  After that all the commodores, and so on.  I have bad luck with hard drives, they die all the time. Even my first ssd deceased after a few months, never happens said the retailer, but it did. Got a new one for free. But I've lost a lot of data in the beginning. Now I got 4 backup systems just to be sure.

So dear Hobold, I think I'm the oldest one here on the forum with 66 years of age and one leg in the grave :) "dust to dust" you know ;) And a lot of great pictures from those days are worthless because of the the size, far too small.. Little movies at 320, and we were so proud and amazed.  I remember resizing images myself to 480 for otherwise they used too much space and hard drives were relatively expensive.

So indeed, that all improved to a point that it even goes beyond understanding. The AI, supercomputers, neural networks... and we are still just at the beginning in my humble opinion ;) Incredibly interesting and a bit dangerous, but fascinating.

So be kind to the older people on the forum, for we have seen the Flintstones computers :D  And I want my emoticons!  :head_batting:

grtz.
